Turkish football's golden era. Under Şenol Güneş, Türkiye finished second in the group, edged Japan 1-0 and Senegal 1-0 (extra time) to reach the semi-final. After losing 0-1 to Brazil, they beat hosts South Korea 3-2 in the third-place play-off. Hakan Şükür's 10.8-second strike remains the fastest goal in World Cup history.
